Past, Present and Future

Thursday 28 October 2021

Turingzaal, Amsterdam Science Park Congress Center, The Netherlands

Despite 50 years of nitrogen research, the Netherlands faces biodiversity-threatening levels of nitrogen in the environment and a hot debate about ‘the nitrogen crisis’. Nitrogen deposition levels have become concerning, not only of scientist but also the public. For this reason, the 25th anniversary edition of Current Themes in Ecology is going to broach the issue of nitrogen and nitrogen deposition and puts the knowledge into perspective on how to take action. We start by taking a critical look back into the past: What has been discovered decades ago? Why was policy not dramatically changed based on the scientific results back then? Then we will educate ourselves on the wide-range of current nitrogen research in various terrestrial ecosystems. Last, we will put the knowledge into a future perspective and discuss how the field of ecology can significantly contribute to solutions of the nitrogen crisis.

The programme for the symposium starts at 9.30 am. After a word of welcome by the Chairs of the day and an anniversary lecture by one of the initiators of Current Themes in Ecology, no less than 6 speakers will present us their research on nitrogen and nitrogen cycling. We are going to wrap up the day in a plenary discussion (5.00 pm) during which the debate on the hot topic of nitrogen can continue. More details on the programme will follow soon.
