NERN Best Paper Award 2010

 

During the Award Ceremony of Netherlands Annual Ecology Meeting, a prize will be awarded for the best scientific paper in ecology and evolution published by a PhD candidate in the year before the meeting (in this case published in 2009). The total of € 1500,- prize money will be divided between the winner (€ 750), second prize (€ 500) and third prize (€ 250).
 

Eligibility criteria for the call of the 2010 award:
1.      The paper is about an ecological or evolutionary topic
2.      The paper should be part of a PhD study, i.e., be part of a PhD thesis
3.      The project is done at a Dutch or Belgian university or research institute (i.e. the graduation has been or will be in the Netherlands or Belgium)
4.      The PhD candidate or recent graduate submitting the paper to the competition is the first author of the paper
5.      The paper has been published in the year 2009 in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. This means that the paper has appeared in print with 2009 as year of publication. Papers in press or published “early online” in 2009 are only eligible if they already have a Digital Object Indentifier (DOI). Papers not accepted for this call are papers that are to be published 2010. These can be submitted to the competition next year.
 

Criteria for evaluation:
The jury will consist of a group of upcoming, high-profile scientists who recently acquired a prestigious scholarship and/or position at a Dutch university or research institute. They will evaluate the papers for the following criteria:
1.      The novelty, creativity of the main idea and/or approach
2.      The expected impact of the paper (will it lead to a new direction or field?)
3.      The clarity and attractiveness of the paper for a broad scientific audience (non-specialists in the field)?
4.      Comparison of the paper with others in its field

 

Procedure for application:
1.      Applications for the NERN best paper award consist of the following material:
-           A pdf of the paper
-           The filled in form (To download the form click here)
2.      Applications should be sent before Wednesday 20 January, 14.00 p.m. to claudius.vandevijver@wur.nl who will foward the paper to the jury. Only applications in electronic form are taken into consideration.
3.      The winner will be announced at the award ceremony at the end of the NERN meeting, Applicants are expected to all attend this ceremony.
